Learning how to read. A study of readers and the reading act in David Mitchell’s cloud atlas

Resumen
La obra de David Mitchell ha sido analizada en profundidad por la literatura especializada, principalmente su tercera novela, El atlas de las nubes, uno de los trabajos contemporáneos más reconocidos en lengua inglesa. Sin embargo, la figura del lector y la experiencia de lectura apenas han sido cubiertos en la producción de Mitchell. Esta disertación busca demostrar cómo la figura del lector constituye el motor narrativo de El atlas de las nubes, convirtiéndose en el nexo de unión de sus historias más relevante. También persigue dilucidar cómo la novela realza una experiencia de lectura activa y creativa desafiando los intereses, conocimientos, convicciones y capacidades del lector.
David Mitchell’s corpus has been deeply analyzed by specialized literature, especially his third novel, Cloud Atlas, one of the most renowned contemporary works in the English language. However, the figure of the reader and the reading experience have barely been covered in Mitchell’s production. This dissertation aims to demonstrate how the figure of the reader constitutes the narrative engine of Cloud Atlas, becoming the most significant nexus of its stories. It also pursues to depict how the novel enhances an active and creative reading experience by challenging the reader’s interests, knowledge, convictions, and capacities.
