NP POSTMODIFICATION IN B2 AND C1 ENGLISH LEARNER WRITING

Abstract

[ES]Este trabajo aporta un estudio de un corpus de estudiantes sobre la postmodificación en el sintagma nominal por parte de alumnos con nivel B2 y C1 en inglés como lengua extranjera. Los datos investigados son dos subsecciones pertenecientes al FineDesc Corpus (Díez-Bedmar, 2022). Los subcorpus han sido anotados manualmente en primer lugar poder caracterizar la postmodificación en el sintagma nominal en cada nivel y en segundo lugar para descubrir si hay alguna diferencia en la producción de postmodificación en el sintagma nominal por parte de los estudiantes con niveles de B2 y C1. Este estudio señala que los estudiantes B2 y C1 siguen una tendencia similar en su uso de la postmodificación siendo los sintagmas preposicionales el tipo de postmodificador más recurrente por estudiantes que tienen español como lengua materna y que aprenden inglés como lengua extranjera.

[EN] This Master’s Dissertation provides a learner corpus study on Noun Phrase postmodification by EFL students at CEFR B2 and C1 levels in English. The data investigated are two subsections of the FineDesc Corpus (Díez-Bedmar, 2022). The subcorpora have been manually annotated so as to firstly characterize NP postmodification in each CEFR level of proficiency and secondly, to reveal if there is any difference in the production of NP postmodification by B2 and C1 learners. This study points out that B2 and C1 learners follow a similar tendency in their use of postmodification, Prepositional Phrases (PPs) being the most recurrent type of postmodification employed by L1 Spanish EFL learners.
