“Drama in the EFL classroom: adaptations of Shakespeare’s Hamlet“

Resumen
[ES] Este trabajo reflexiona sobre los beneficios que pueden resultar de la introducción del teatro en las clases de inglés como lengua extranjera. También toma en consideración cómo se puede explotar para poder motivar a los alumnos y mejorar su conocimiento del idioma. Este estudio se centrará especialmente en la explotación de una de las obras escritas por William Shakespeare: Hamlet. Se comparan cinco adaptaciones diferentes de la obra, dos de ellas especialmente preparadas para estudiantes de inglés como lengua extranjera. La comparación se realizará a través de diferentes elementos comunes a todas ellas que podrían influir en el proceso de aprendizaje de los estudiantes. El propósito de este estudio es llegar a una serie de conclusiones que ayudarán en la planificación de una unidad didáctica. Esta unidad se destinará a alumnos de cuarto de la Educación Secundaria Obligatoria y se centrará en la explotación de Hamlet a través de actividades diversas.
[EN] This Master’s Dissertation reflects the benefits that bringing drama into the classroom of English as a foreign language can produce. It also considers how it can be exploited in order to motivate students and improve their knowledge of the language. In particular, this study focuses on the exploitation of a play written by William Shakespeare: Hamlet. Five different adaptations of this play are compared, two of them are specifically aimed at students of English as a foreign language. This comparison will be carried out by going through different elements common to all of them that could have an influence in the learning process of the students. The purpose of this comparison is to reach a series of conclusions that will help to plan a didactic unit. This didactic unit will be intended for students of the 4th year of Compulsory Secondary Education and it will be focused on exploiting Hamlet through diverse activities.
