Corpus linguistics assisted critical discourse analysis of the representation of Syrian refugees and Ukrainian refugees in The Guardian and The Telegraph

Abstract

El artículo examina la representación de los refugiados sirios y ucranianos en la prensa británica, en concreto en The Guardian y The Telegraph, en el período de un año (año 2015 para los refugiados sirios y año 2022 para los refugiados ucranianos). Se aplica una sinergia metodológica de Lingüística de Corpus (LC) y Análisis Crítico del Discurso (ACD) para comparar la representación de cada grupo de refugiados en los dos periódicos ideológicamente opuestos, utilizando análisis de colocaciones, concordancias y palabras clave. Los resultados revelan diferencias en la representación de los refugiados sirios y ucranianos en ambos periódicos: los primeros se representan mayoritariamente en términos negativos/neutrales, e incluso a menudo vinculados a la amenaza terrorista, mientras que los segundos aparecen mayoritariamente representados con términos positivos/neutrales, como aliados que merecen ayuda humanitaria.

The paper examines the representation of Syrian and Ukrainian refugees in the British Press, more specifically in The Guardian and The Telegraph in a one-year time span (year 2015 for the Syrian refugees and year 2022 for the Ukrainian refugees. A methodological synergy of Corpus Linguistics (CL) and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) is implemented to compare the representation of each refugee group in the two ideologically opposed newspapers, using collocation, concordance, and keyword analysis. The results reveal differences in the representation of Syrian and Ukrainian refugees in both newspapers, with the former mostly depicted in negative/neutral terms, and even oftentimes linked to the terrorist threat, and the latter mostly represented in positive/neutral terms, as allies who deserve humanitarian aid.
