[EN]The main aim of this Dissertation is to examine and determine whether Eleanor Vance, the protagonist of Shirley Jackson's most acclaimed novel, The Haunting of Hill House (1959) could be considered to fall under the category of the female Gothic heroine. In order to be able to prove such affirmation, first, we have considered it necessary to address the genesis of Female Gothic literature and the characteristics intrinsic to this literary genre so as to identify and to explain then, what the central traits of a female Gothic heroine are. Thus, we will carry out a close reading of The Haunting of Hill House so as to analyze the proposed parameters and therefore conclude whether Eleanor Vance qualifies as a female Gothic heroine.
