A LITERARY REVIEW ON LINGUISTIC ANXIETY IN THE LEARNING OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES

Abstract

[ES] En el aprendizaje de una lengua extranjera, los estudiantes pueden experimentar ansiedad lingüística. El presente Trabajo Final de Máster persigue dilucidar este fenómeno. En primer lugar, se desataca la relevancia de la dimensión emocional del aprendiz, enmarcando los conceptos clave, subrayando la contribución de diferentes enfoques en este campo, y describiendo una serie de factores individuales relacionados con la afectividad y, consecuentemente, con la ansiedad lingüística. A continuación, nos centramos en focalizar la delimitación conceptual de la ansiedad lingüística para diferenciarla de otros tipos de ansiedad. Asimismo, se exponen las principales causas y consecuencias atribuidas a este tipo de ansiedad. Finalmente, se concluye retratando aquellas estrategias que la literatura especializada ha demostrado efectivas para manejar este tipo de ansiedad.

[EN] When learning a foreign language, students may experience linguistic anxiety. The present Master's Dissertation aims to elucidate this phenomenon. Firstly, the relevance of the learner's emotional dimension is highlighted, framing the key concepts, underscoring the contribution of different approaches in this field, and describing a series of individual factors related to affectivity and, consequently, to linguistic anxiety. It then proceeds to focus on the conceptual delimitation of linguistic anxiety to differentiate it from other types of anxiety. Likewise, the main causes and consequences attributed to this type of anxiety are exposed. Finally, it concludes by portraying those strategies that the specialised literature has demonstrated to be effective in the management of this type of anxiety.
