Anticancer platinum compounds represent one of the great successes in the field of inorganic medicinal chemistry and their production has been marked by the confluence of chance and the rational design of their development. Although platinum complexes were introduced in the market nearly 40 years ago, these remain the major anticancer agents. In this review, it is studied the developments that have taken different platinum complexes over time and, broadly, the mechanisms of action that the main complexes have, as well as, their side effects and the resistance that organisms show against them sometimes. Finally, nanotechnology is influencing the treatments in which these compounds are involved.
