[EN] This paper consists of a literature review on counterfactual and semifactual thinking, composed of the latest experiments referring to these cognitive phenomena in relation to different areas of psychology among which we can find interactions with causal inferences, causal reasoning, morality, critical judgment, emotional reactivity, regret, affect, subjective well-being, personality, causal attribution, attention, episodic memory and semantic memory. The aim of this literature review is to expose the influence of these hypothetical processes in everyday life. To this end, we start from an interpersonal perspective, as would be expected from a cognitive stance, to reach a social perspective in some experiments where the line of the possible and the plausible makes imaginary hypothetical thoughts to be found in the real world influencing one's own causal judgment.
