Genre, society and honour in the story of Romeo and Juliet in Bandello, Shakespeare and Lope de Vega

Abstract

Este trabajo de final de máster examina las diferentes formas en que Romeo y Julieta de Shakespeare y Castelvines y Monteses de Lope de Vega se acercan al sustrato medievalizante de la prosa original de Bandello, la cual tiene gran influencia sobre las anteriores. Para ello, el principal foco de atención estaría puesto en el papel del honor. No solo se analizaría en el ámbito literario sino también en el contexto de cada autor, teniendo en cuenta tanto su período y nación. Por lo tanto, el concepto de honor se ramificará en diferentes tipologías y se conectará con otras teorías para identificar su sesgo cultural en la literatura. Una vez introducido el concepto de honor, se investiga su papel en cada versión de la historia de los amantes de Verona. Como se menciona anteriormente, diferentes aspectos literarios serán modificados y adaptados por el rol del honor. De ahí que se estudien y ejemplifiquen algunas evidencias como la determinación del género, la trama y los personajes, entre otros, para mostrar su fidelidad a la fuente original y al trato de dicho honor. Finalmente, en la conclusión busco mostrar cómo el concepto del honor, siendo similar en las tres obras, ha sido calibrado modulado en cada una de ellas.

This dissertation examines the different ways in which Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and Lope de Vega’s Castelvines y Monteses are close to the medieval substratum of Bandello's original prose story to which both plays are indebted. In order to do so, the main focus of attention would be placed on the role of honour. Not only would it be analysed in the literary realm but also in the context of each author, taking into account both time and place. Hence, the concept of honour will be branched in different typologies and connected to other theories so as to identify its cultural bias on literature. Once the concept of honour is introduced, its role in each Verona-lovers story version is investigated. As mentioned above, different dimensions are moulded and adapted for the sake of honour. Hence, some evidence of the determination of genre, plot and characters, among others, are studied and exemplified so as to display their faithfulness to the original source and the treatment of honour. Eventually, in the conclusion I seek to show how the concept of honour being similar in the tree works, has been gauged and modulated in each of them.
