THE TRANSLATION OF SWEARWORDS IN PULP FICTION

Abstract

[ES]El uso de palabrotas puede ser considerado como un hecho ofensivo e inapropiado, pero su empleo está habitualmente presente en nuestro discurso en mayor o menor medida. En realidad, siempre han formado parte de la lengua, no importa cual sea, y, como parte de ella, deberían ser consideradas y, en su caso, analizadas. Cuando de un idioma foráneo se trata, una de las mayores dificultades que presentan estas palabras es su traducción, pues están íntimamente ligadas a la cultura y giros lingüísticos de la lengua traducida. El objeto del presente estudio se centra en la película Pulp Fiction (1994), dirigida y escrita por Quentin Tarantino, y el principal objetivo es el análisis de la traducción de algunos de estas “tacos” (en su expresión coloquial) tanto en la versión subtitulada como en el doblaje de la cinta, a través del estudio de las diferentes estrategias de traducción utilizadas en ambas versiones.

[EN]Swearwords may be considered offensive and inappropriate, but it is a common practice done by all the speakers of a language, to one extent or another. They have always existed in language and they are always present in our everyday conversation. Therefore, as they are part of the language, they should be analysed. One of the most controversial points regarding swearwords is their translation from one language into another, as swearwords are culturally biased. The corpus object of study is the 1994 American film, Pulp Fiction, directed and written by Quentin Tarantino. The main aim of the present paper is to analyse the way swearwords are translated in the Spanish version of the film, in both the dubbed and the subtitled versions. Moreover, this paper also aims to analyse the different translation techniques used in order to render the swearwords into Spanish in both audio visual modalities.
