Nicotina y Esquizotipia

Abstract

El consumo de nicotina se ha relacionado frecuentemente con la esquizofrenia, habiéndose hallado una mayor incidencia de tabaquismo en este grupo de población. Sin embargo, la relación entre consumo de tabaco y rasgos esquizotípicos no ha sido tan investigada. En este trabajo de fin de grado se analizaron las diferencias en rasgos esquizotípicos entre estudiantes universitarios consumidores y no consumidores de tabaco. En el estudio participaron 71 alumnos de la asignatura de Psicofarmacología, de 3º del Grado de Psicología de la Universidad de Jaén. Se utilizó la prueba de evaluación MSTQ-R, un cuestionario que mide los siguientes factores relacionados con la esquizotipia: síntomas positivos, síntomas negativos y no conformidad impulsiva, al mismo tiempo que los participantes contestaban una encuesta relativa a sus patrones diarios de consumo de tabaco. Los resultados indicaron que, en comparación con los no fumadores, los fumadores obtuvieron puntuaciones más elevadas en el factor de no conformidad impulsiva. Estos resultados se analizan en el contexto de las hipótesis explicativas que relacionan la nicotina con la esquizofrenia, la impulsividad y la esquizotipia, tratando de establecer las relaciones entre el consumo de esta droga de abuso y rasgos de personalidad relacionados con el espectro esquizotípico.

Nicotine consumption has been frequently related with schizophrenia, indicating a higher incidence of smoking in this clinical population. By contrast, the relationship between nicotine and schizotypal traits is not as clear. In this study we analyzed the differences in schizotypal traits between tobacco consumers and not consumers in a sample of students from the University of Jaen. To this aim, 71 students enrolled in the course of psychopharmacology (third course of Psychology Degree of the University of Jaen) were assessed in schizotypal traits by using the questionnaire MSTQ-R. This test measures the following factors related to schizotypy: positive symptoms, negative symptoms and not impulsive compliance. In additions, participants answered a survey on their daily patterns of consumption of tobacco. The results indicated that, compared with nonsmokers, smokers showed higher scores on the factor of not impulsive conformity. These results are discussed in the context of the explanatory hypotheses that relate nicotine to schizophrenia, schizotypal and impulsivity, trying to establish the relationship between the consumption of this drug of abuse and personality traits related to the schizotypal spectrum.
