Las cajas de ahorros: historia, crisis y reestructuración

Abstract

[ES] El sector bancario español ha experimentado en los últimos años la mayor transformación en su historia. Estos cambios han afectado de forma muy especial a las cajas de ahorro, que han sido las entidades que más dificultades han presentado para afrontar la crisis financiera. Este trabajo se centra en estas instituciones de ahorro. Por un lado se revisan sus orígenes y su historia para comprender su especial naturaleza. Y por otro se analiza el impacto de la crisis en el sector bancario y las medidas adoptadas para hacer frente, así como el proceso de reestructuración experimentado por las cajas de ahorro.

[EN] The Spanish banking sector has experienced in recent years the greatest transformation in its history. These changes have affected a very special way to the savings banks, which are entities that have presented more difficulties to cope with the financial crisis. This work focuses on these thrifts. On the one hand its origins and history are reviewed to understand their special nature. And on the other the impact of the crisis in the banking sector and the measures taken to address as well as the restructuring process undergone by the savings banks is analyzed.
