The Americanisation of the Dual Past Tense Forms in English

Abstract

[ES] Este TFM es un análisis basado en corpus del uso del pasado simple y del participio de pasado en seis variedades del inglés: británico, estadounidense, canadiense, sudafricano, indio y jamaicano. El trabajo analiza el uso y distribución de las formas regulares -ed e irregulares tradicionales en estas variedades. El análisis se ha planteado desde el punto de vista de la variación lingüística, no sólo diatópica sino también en función de la tipología del verbo, el tiempo verbal (pasado simple o participio), el tipo de texto o la frecuencia del verbo en cuestión. El trabajo parte de un estado de la cuestión del inglés en cada una de estas variedades para centrarse posteriormente en las circunstancias que han motivado la existencia de estas formas duales en inglés.

[EN] This dissertation is a corpus-based analysis of the use of the past simple and past participle forms in six different English varieties: British, American, Canadian, South African, Indian and Jamaican. The study analyses the use and distribution of the regular -ed forms and the traditional irregular forms in these varieties. The study has been conceived from the perspective of linguistic variation, not only diatopic but also in terms of the typology of the verb, the tense (simple past or past participle), the frequency of the verbs along with the level of the formality of the text. It includes an overview of each English variety as well as the history of these dual past tense forms which is then used to try to explain the present situation across the varieties.
