La iconografía de la Flagelación

Abstract

La iconografía de la Flagelación tiene como principal fuente literaria las Celestiales Revelaciones de Santa Brígida. Esta iconografía cobra una relevancia especial en el Barroco. En el arte español la Flagelación ha sido representada en abundantes obras. Asimismo, en España se desarrollaron dos variaciones iconográficas de la Flagelación, que son las de Cristo recogiendo sus vestiduras y Cristo contemplado por el alma cristiana, iconografías que surgieron a partir de textos místicos barrocos.

The iconography of the Flagellation has as its main literary source the Celestial Revelations of Saint Bridget. This iconography takes on a special relevance in the Baroque. In Spanish art the Flagellation has been represented in abundant works. Likewise, in Spain two iconographic variations of the Flagellation were developed, which are those of Christ collecting his garments and Christ contemplated by the Christian soul, iconographies that emerged from baroque mystical texts.
