Characterization in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

Abstract

En este trabajo se analiza la caracterización de los personajes principales de Harry Potter y la piedra filosofal, siguiendo el modelo de caracterización de Jonathan Culpeper, donde la impresión de un lector con respecto a un personaje se forma por la interacción entre el texto y el conocimiento previo. El análisis de este trabajo se centra en identificar las características más destacables de los personajes, tales como la valentía, la inteligencia, la amistad o el amor, entre otros, con el objetivo de demostrar que cada personaje está dotado de un aspecto y unas cualidades que le dan identidad, haciéndolos únicos en la novela.The object of this project is to analyze the characterization of the main figures in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, following Jonathan Culpeper’s model for characterization, where the impression that a reader gets from a character is formed by the interaction between the text and prior knowledge. The analysis of this project is focused on identifying the most remarkable features of the characters, like bravery, intelligence, friendship, love, etc., with the aim of demonstrating every character owns an aspect and some qualities that give him/her an identity that makes him/her unique in the novel.
