The concept of empathy has been in the spotlight since the first time it was used, by countless authors and from different perspectives. For this reason, a brief journey is made through the history of the most relevant authors and their contributions to this construct. Next, the brain areas related to this term and the possible explanations found in relation to autism are exposed. Subsequently, a journey through the time of the authors who have worked on autism and their contributions is made. The mirror neuron hypothesis, theory of mind, and autism are covered, as well as possible gender differences in empathy. This work aims to carry out a bibliographic review of documents of a scientific nature, as well as research and publications in this field, in order to state said findings, facilitating their understanding.
