A thematic parallel in the 20th-century short story of Ireland and the USA: Isolation

Abstract

El objetivo de este proyecto ha sido examinar las similitudes y las diferencias entre el tema del aislamiento en el relato del siglo XX de Irlanda y Estados Unidos utilizando el paralelo temático. A partir del análisis de tres relatos irlandeses y tres americanos, se han identificado tres similitudes: el aislamiento no afecta a niños, los personajes no entran en un estado de aislamiento deliberadamente y el aislamiento tiene lugar en zonas poco pobladas. Además, se han establecido dos diferencias: los relatos irlandeses muestran un personaje solitario motivado por el miedo, mientras que los americanos muestran un personaje rechazado por el grupo; y los personajes están dispuestos a escapar del aislamiento en el relato irlandés, pero en el americano los personajes tienden a rendirse ante el aislamiento. Se han encontrado más similitudes que diferencias, pero ambas se basan en un aislamiento representado de manera natural, fiel a la vida real.

This project aimed at the examination of the similarities and differences between the theme of isolation in the 20th-century short story of Ireland and the USA by utilizing the thematic parallel. From the analysis of three Irish and three American stories, three similarities were identified: isolation does not affect children, characters do not enter isolation deliberately, and isolation occurs in sparsely populated areas. Moreover, two differences were established: Irish texts present a solitary character motivated by fear, whereas American stories present a character rejected by the group; and characters are willing to escape isolation in the short story, but in the American one finds characters who tend to give up to isolation. More similarities than differences have been found, but both are based on isolation presented in a natural way, true to real life.
