El sector de las cooperativas de crédito. Perspectiva histórica y concentración reciente

Abstract

[ES] Las cooperativas de crédito forman parte del sistema bancario español junto con los bancos y las cajas de ahorros. Son entidades con una doble naturaleza de sociedades cooperativas y de entidades de depósito. Aunque actualmente no existen diferencias operativas entre ellas, en sus orígenes, estas sociedades, que surgieron con la finalidad de atender las necesidades financieras de sus socios, en su mayoría estaban centradas en el ámbito rural, aunque también surgieron cooperativas de crédito en torno a grupos profesionales o industriales. A lo largo de este trabajo se analiza la evolución experimentada por estas sociedades, desde sus inicios hasta la fecha actual. Se estudia la homogeneización de este sector y cómo ha enfrentado las dificultades derivadas de la crisis. Los problemas del sistema bancario español de los últimos años no han afectado tanto a este grupo de entidades como a las cajas de ahorros, aunque han motivado un replanteamiento de su estrategia, optando por la concentración.

[EN] Credit cooperatives are part of the Spanish banking system with banks and savings banks. They are entities with a dual nature of cooperative societies and deposit institutions. Although today there are no operational differences between them, in their origins, these companies, which emerged in order to meet the financial needs of its members, most were centered in rural areas, but also arose credit unions around professional or industrial groups. Throughout this work the evolution experienced by these companies is analyzed, from its beginnings to the current date. Homogenization of this sector is studied and how it has faced difficulties arising from the crisis. The problems of the Spanish banking system in recent years have not affected this group of entities as savings banks, but have led them to a rethinking of their strategy, opting for concentration.
