Renaissance drama in the english classroom: William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing , a didactic proposal

Resumen
El objetivo principal de este trabajo fin de Máster es incorporar el teatro renacentista en el aula de inglés como lengua extranjera. Este propósito se llevará acabo utilizando una adaptación literaria de la obra Much Ado About Nothing de William Shakespeare. Para ello, la primera parte de esta tesis se basa en una introducción de la literatura renacentista inglesa, seguida de diferentes apartados dedicados al teatro renacentista inglesa, destacando los dramaturgos más relevantes del periodo. Una parte del marco teórico hace hincapié en William Shakespeare y en Much Ado About Nothing. Además, se enumeran los
principales beneficios de incluir la literatura y a William Shakespeare en el aula de inglés. La segunda parte se basa en una propuesta de unidad didáctica que emplea la lectura adaptada de la comedia de Shakespeare, para cual se aplica una metodología ecléctica.
The primary purpose of this Master’s Dissertation is to incorporate Renaissance theatre into the English language classroom as a foreign language. This purpose shall be accomplished by using a literary adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. To this end, the first part of this dissertation is based on an introduction to English Renaissance literature, followed by different sections devoted to English Renaissance drama, highlighting the most relevant playwrights of the period. One part of the theoretical framework emphasises on William Shakespeare and Much Ado About Nothing. Furthermore, the main benefits of including literature and William Shakespeare in the English classroom are enumerated. The second part is based on a didactic unit proposal employing a graded reader of Shakespeare’s comedy, following an eclectic methodology.
