INTERCULTURALITY IN THE EFL B2 COURSEBOOKS USED IN OFFICIAL SCHOOLS OF LANGUAGES IN THE VALENCIAN COMMUNITY

Abstract

[ES] El presente trabajo tiene como objeto estudiar el componente intercultural en los tres libros de texto de inglés como lengua extranjera mayoritariamente empleados en Escuelas Oficiales de Idiomas en la Comunidad Valenciana (España). La investigación se desarrolla en cuatro ámbitos diferentes: textos escritos y orales, imágenes y actividades basadas en el aprendizaje cultural. Si bien existe una cierta tendencia a incluir elementos culturales alejados del tradicional enfoque enciclopédico, no es menos cierto que los ejemplos hallados son insuficientes en número, superficiales en tratamiento y de limitada extrapolabilidad para representar globalmente a la cultura en la que se encuadran. Además de ello, no se fomentan mediante imágenes ni actividades comunicativas los encuentros interculturales y sus beneficios, al contrario de lo que sugieren al respecto la bibliografía de las últimas décadas y los documentos publicados por el Consejo de Europa sobre la enseñanza de lenguas extranjeras.[EN] The present study aims to study the intercultural component in the three most popular English as a Foreign Language coursebooks used in Official Schools of Languages in the Valencian Community (Spain). Research pivots on four main fields: written and oral texts, images and culture-based activities. While there is a certain tendency to include cultural aspects which go beyond the traditional encyclopaedic approach, it is no less true that those occurrences are insufficient in number, shallow in depth and of limited extrapolability to globally represent the culture to which they belong. In addition, intercultural encounters and their benefits are not fostered through images or communicative activities, in contrast to the suggestions made by research in the last decades and the documents published by the Council of Europe in relation to foreign language teaching.
