La memoria y sus recuerdos no muestran una representación impecable de la realidad, la gran cantidad de información que nos llega desde el exterior hace imposible la codificación, el almacenamiento y el recuerdo fiel de toda ella. La psicología del testimonio se ha interesado en analizar aquellos factores que inciden en los procesos básicos de la memoria y que pueden alterar la obtención de un testimonio exacto y de calidad. Se ha considerado relevante destacar la imperfección de la memoria de los testigos y con ello, los factores personales, del evento vivenciado y del sistema judicial implicados en la capacidad de declaración del sujeto, para así tener un conocimiento más completo del proceso judicial y poder ayudar al dictamen de un veredicto lo más crítico posible.
Memory and its memories don’t show an impeccable representation of reality, the large amount of information that reaches us from the outside makes it impossible to encode, store and faithfully remember all of it. The psychology of testimony has been interested in analyzing those factors that affect the basic processes of memory and that can alter the obtaining of an accurate and quality testimony. It has been considered relevant to highlight the imperfection of the witnesses memory and with it, the personal factors, the event experienced and the judicial system involved in the subject's ability to testify, in order to have a more complete knowledge of the judicial process and to be able to assist in reaching the most critical verdict possible.
