Teaching English through Literature: Using to Kill a Mockingbird to Consolidate Reading Skills in the EFL Classroom

Resumen
[ES] Este proyecto se basa en tres áreas principales: el desarrollo de la destreza lectora, la motivación en jóvenes estudiantes, y la literatura como forma de enseñar inglés. Además, el proyecto incluye la evaluación de un libro de texto de inglés en cuarto de la ESO con el objetivo de analizar cómo la destreza lectora es trabajada. Finalmente, se añade un ejemplo de cómo trabajar la destreza lectora con tareas y actividades diseñadas para promover un enfoque comunicativo, participativo, activo y motivador.
El proyecto comienza con el marco teórico de los antecedentes de cómo la literatura era usada en la enseñanza de lenguas, las ventajas de utilizar textos literarios en la clase de inglés, el desarrollo de la destreza lectora y el papel de la motivación en la enseñanza de lenguas. Éste continúa con el análisis de actividades y tareas de lectura en un libro de texto inglés, para culminar con la propuesta de materiales basados en una conocida obra literaria de Harper Lee.
[EN] This project is based on three main areas: the development of the reading skill, motivation in young learners, and literature as a way to teach English. Moreover, the project includes the evaluation of an English coursebook for students in the 4th year of Secondary Education in order to analyze how the reading skill is worked on it. Finally, an example of how to work the reading skills with tasks and activities designed to promote a communicative, participatory, active and motivating approach is also added. The project starts with a theoretical approach to the antecedents of how literature was used in language teaching, the advantageous use of literary texts in the English classroom, the development of reading skills and the role of motivation in language teaching. It continues with the analysis of reading activities and tasks in an English coursebook, to culminate with the proposal of materials based on a famous literary work by Harper Lee.
