Literature in the EFL classroom: Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games and Ethics

Resumen
Debido a mi experiencia de prácticas en un instituto de enseñanza secundaria, en este trabajo intento demostrar que es posible la enseñanza del inglés a través de la Literatura. En un Sistema Educativo donde prima el uso de la gramática para la enseñanza de idiomas propongo un aprendizaje basado en la Literatura y en los diferentes juegos y actividades que expongo en mi unidad didáctica. Asimismo y debido al momento histórico que estamos viviendo en el que los adolescentes dan más importancia a las nuevas tecnologías que a sus iguales, propongo la enseñanza de un idioma no sólo a través de la literatura sino usando también la educación en valores. A pesar de las limitaciones que mi trabajo pueda presentar, espero que contribuya a un tipo de enseñanza de idiomas más interactiva y a una sociedad más democrática en la multiculturalidad.
Due to my practical experience in a Secondary School, I pretend to demonstrate in this essay that a Learning of English as Foreign Language is possible through Literature. In an Educational system where the use of grammar in the Learning Language process is the rule, I propose a Learning process based on Literature and on different games and activities that I show in my didactic unit. In addition and due to the historical moment we live, in which teenagers give more importance to new technologies than to their equals; I purpose a learning method of languages not only through the Literature but also using education in values. Despite the possible errors that my work can present, I hope to contribute to a more interactive Learning method and to a more democratic and multicultural society.
