The Complexity of the Noun Phrase in Learner Language. A learner corpus-based study at CEFR B1 level.

Abstract

El propósito de este trabajo es el estudio de la complejidad del sintagma nominal en composiciones escritas por CEFR B1 estudiantes de Ingles (B1). En la primera parte, se describe el sintagma nominal en relación a sus estructuras de pre-modificación y post-modificación. También se define la complejidad sintáctica para entender el grado de complejidad del sintagma nominal. La evolución de la complejidad del sintagma nominal se ha revisado para mostrar como la complejidad del sintagma nominal es medida en composiciones por estudiantes nativos y no nativos de inglés. El análisis científico consiste en la anotación de todos los sintagmas nominales en 44 textos de estudiantes de B1. Una taxonomía fue usada para este propósito. Posteriormente a la anotación, se realizaron estudios estadísticos para describir los tipos del sintagma nominal más usados y menos usados en las producciones escritas por estudiantes españoles de B1.

This BA Dissertation aims at studying noun phrase complexity in the written production by CEFR B1 learners of English (B1). In the first part, the noun phrase is described in relation to its pre-modification and post-modification structures. Also, syntactic complexity is defined to understand the degree of complexity of the noun phrase. The literature on noun phrase complexity has been revised to show how noun phrase complexity is measured in compositions by native and non-native English students. The empirical analysis consists of the annotation of all noun phrases in 44 texts by B1 students. A taxonomy was used by such purpose. After the annotation, descriptive statistics were used to describe the noun phrase types which are most and least used in the written production by B1 Spanish learners.
