Teaching the pronunciation of English to Spanish segundo de bachillerato students: an international perspective

Abstract

[ES]Este Trabajo de Fin de Máster quiere ser una aproximación a un aspecto muy conocido del inglés, la pronunciación. Es un tema lleno de controversia, y el objetivo de este trabajo es intentar profundizar un poco más en la enseñanza y el aprendizaje de la pronunciación, teniendo el inglés como segunda lengua o lengua extranjera. Mi tarea en esta tesis es la búsqueda de las diferentes prioridades que se pueden encontrar en publicaciones actuales, prioridades en las cuales, quizás, un autor tiene en cuenta factores importantes para él y desestima otros que son considerados esenciales para autores también tratados aquí. Cabe decir que los trabajos elegidos para este escrito son conocidos en todo el mundo debido a sus prestigiosos autores. De hecho, mi intención en cierto modo es ofrecer una fundamentación desde mi experiencia como aprendiz y profesor, es decir, desde un enfoque crítico, de los criterios seguidos por dichos autores para lo que ellos creen que es el modo más efectivo de enseñar y aprender la pronunciación de un idioma no nativo. De esta manera, este trabajo representa mi acercamiento a la cuestión previamente planteada. A continuación, se incluirá una unidad didáctica específica para mejorar factores en el estudiante tales como la competencia o la fluidez, entre otros.

[EN]This Master’s Thesis is intended to be an approach to a well-known aspect of English language, its pronunciation. As this aspect is full of controversy, this work seeks to go in depth a little more in the teaching and learning of pronunciation matters where English is a second or foreign language. My task on the Thesis is the pursuit of different priorities that can be found in current publications, priorities in which, maybe, an author takes into account factors that are important for him or her (e.g. age, attitude, motivation), but there are some others missing that may be essential for authors under study here as well. It has to be said that the works chosen for this paper are known all over the world thanks obviously to their creators. Indeed, it is my intention to comment on the criteria followed by these authors, according to which their way of teaching and learning pronunciation in a non-native language is the most effective, or it tries to be. My thesis is not supposed to be a mere mix of methodologies, but has a critical focus based on my own experience as a learner as well as a teacher. Basically, the thesis represents an approach made by myself centred on the question brought up previously. Later, I include a didactic unit with activities that have been selected to improve the learner’s proficiency and fluency, among other things.
