Frankenstein and Frankissstein: Looking at The Past to Understand the Future

Abstract

Este ensayo tiene dos objetivos. El primero y más importante, que ocupará la primera parte de este trabajo es hacer una comparación entre Frankenstein de Mary Shelley y Frankisstein: A Love Story de Jeanette Winterson, para encontrar los paralelismos existentes entre las dos obras – ya sea en la forma de personajes, o en la forma de problemas éticos y morales que los dos libros abordan; y los aspectos cruciales de Frankenstein que aún son relevantes en la sociedad, dos siglos después. El segundo objetivo de este ensayo, que se desarrollará en la segunda parte de este trabajo es ahondar en los diferentes problemas que Winterson trata en su novel bajo la mirada del post-humanismo, desde inteligencia artificial a la cuestión de cómo los robots sexuales pueden llegar a suponer el incremento de casos de agresiones sexuales.

This essay has two important aims to develop. The first and most important one, and what will occupy the first half of this research paper is to make a comparison between Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Jeanette Winterson’s Frankissstein: A Love Story, to draw the parallelisms between the two works – be it in the form of characters, or in the form of moral and ethical issues that both works tackle; and the crucial aspects of Frankenstein that are still relevant in today’s society, two centuries later. The second aim of this essay, that will be further developed in the second part of the paper is to delve deeper into the different issues that Winterson treats in her novel in the gaze of post-humanism, from artificial intelligence to the question of how sex robots pose a real-life threat of increasing the cases of sexual aggression.
