FROM THE MINISTRY OF TRUTH TO THE FILTER BUBBLE: MANIPULATION OF DISCOURSE IN 1984 AND THE LOUDEST VOICE

Abstract

[ES]A través del análisis de las teorías de comunicación de masas, específicamente la teoría de los estereotipos de Walter Lippmann y la teoría del simulacro y la simulación de Jean Baudrillard, examinaremos el control del discurso político en la novela de George Orwell 1984 (1949) y la miniserie de TV americana The Loudest Voice (2019). En este estudio argumentamos que los textos literarios son fundamentales para que el individuo desarrolle las competencias de razonamiento crítico y pensamiento independiente por medio de los textos literarios y audiovisuales que forman parte del corpus analizado. Concluimos que, aunque hay casi un siglo de diferencia entre ambas obras, el control de la narrativa tiene igual importancia en el desarrollo del sistema autoritario en 1984 y en la creación de fake news para dañar el sistema democrático en The Loudest Voice.

[EN]Through the analysis of mass communication theories, specifically Walter Lippmann’s theory of stereotypes and Jean Baudrillard’s theory of simulacra and simulation, we will examine the control of the political discourse in George Orwell’s novel 1984 (1949) and the manipulation of the narrative in the media in the American TV miniseries The Loudest Voice (2019). With this, we will argue that literary texts are key for the individual to develop their critical thinking skills and an independent thought by means of literary and audiovisual texts as the ones under study. Finally, we will conclude that, even though there is nearly a century between both works, the control of the narrative is equally important in the development of an authoritarian system in 1984 and in the creation of fake news with the purpose of undermining the democratic system in The Loudest Voice.
