(EN) Alice Munro is one of the most important authors of the 20th century and she is recognized for writing works in which the leading role is played by women, especially in her only novel, Lives of Girls and Women (1971). Gender roles are present throughout the novel, as is the struggle to change the gender role of women, mainly housewives and mothers, to a more modern one. The main topic of this essay is the analysis of the different types of gender roles that are presented in the book. Firstly, some key concepts will be developed as well as the analysis of both male and female roles in environments such as work, love and sexuality. The following step will be the analysis of specific characters that come out of pre-established roles and finally, the last point will be devoted to the comparison of two figures that have completely opposite roles.
