Objective: The aim of this research is prove which theories, the fuzzy-trace theory or activation/monitoring theory, explain better the fact that false memories are produced by two types of processing, superficial analysis and semantic analysis. Method: In order to carry out the research we use the DRM paradigm. Participants studied words lists under different conditions. The first 8 lists were studied while they did a superficial analysis of the words and the last 8 while they did a semantic analysis. Results: The results established that there was a higher percentage of false memory, more critical words were remembered, when a semantic analysis was carried out in the study phase compared to superficial analysis. Conclusion: In conclusion, these results suggest that the best theory which explains false memories is the fuzzy-trace theory.
