The Influence of Motivation and Anxiety in the Learning of English as a Second Language.

Abstract

[ES] Este estudio pretende abordar la relevancia que los constructos de “motivación” y “ansiedad” tienen en el aprendizaje del inglés como lengua extranjera, concretamente en lo que concierne a su efecto en el rendimiento del alumnado. Para cumplir este objetivo, primero, se consultaron referencias bibliográficas claves, tales como Gardner (1985) y Horwitz et al. (1986, 1991). A continuación, se desarrolló una investigación empírica con 44 sujetos pertenecientes a tercero y cuarto de ESO y situada en un instituto público andaluz, empleando dos cuestionarios mixtos independientes para obtener datos referentes a los constructos mencionados. Las respuestas de los sujetos a los elementos cerrados se analizaron estadísticamente, mientras que las respuestas a las preguntas abiertas se estudiaron e interpretaron en detalle. Además, estas respuestas se contrastaron con unos exámenes que se tomaron prestados, para así compararlas con una muestra de su rendimiento. Por último, los hallazgos sugirieron que existe una tendencia que se sitúa a la par con la descrita en la literatura, con los sujetos que declararon más motivación y menos ansiedad tendiendo a obtener mejores notas, siendo cierto también lo contrario, aunque se registraron excepciones. De esto se deduce que es necesario atender las necesidades y objetivos del alumnado para fomentar su motivación e implementar estrategias para reducir su ansiedad.

[EN] This study attempts to address the relevance that the constructs of “motivation” and “anxiety” have in the learning of English as a Foreign Language, concretely to the extent to which they affect the students’ performance. To serve this purpose, firstly, specialised literature such as Gardner (1985) and Horwitz et al. (1986, 1991) were perused and summarised. Next, an empirical research with 44 subjects belonging to the third and fourth courses of Compulsory Secondary Education and contextualised in an Andalusian state high school was conducted, employing two self-contained mixed questionnaires to obtain data concerning the aforesaid constructs. The subjects’ answers to the closed-ended questions were analysed statistically, whilst the replies to the open-ended ones were carefully observed. Borrowed tests were employed to contrast these answers with an instance of the subjects’ performance. Finally, the findings suggested a general tendency in line with the literature, where those subjects who reported more motivation and less anxiety tended to score higher, whilst the opposite was also true; nevertheless, exceptions were identified. From this emerges that addressing the students’ needs and goals to promote motivation and implementing strategies to mitigate anxiety is a must.
