Comic Palatine Comedy in England and in Spain: the Case of El castigo del penseque and The Opportunity

El presente trabajo refleja un estudio del teatro centrado en un subgénero calificado como comedias de enredo en palacio o palatina citando dos obras de los dramaturgos Tirso de Molina y James Shirley: El castigo del penseque y The Opportunity respectivamente. Primero se presenta el género y las características relacionadas con el mismo. En segundo lugar se describe superficialmente el contexto histórico, político y social en el que vivieron los dos autores mencionados. En tercer lugar se comparan las dos obras mencionadas. Al final se añaden ideas principales destacadas en el trabajo.
Como conclusión, se destaca el impacto de las obras en sus respectivos países de origen, al igual que el éxito del que disfrutaron sus autores. También se vuelve a destacar la similitud que tienen las dos obras previamente mencionadas en varios aspectos presentados. Finalmente, se señala la extensión del género teatral mencionado por Europa occidental.
The present paper reflects a study dealing with drama, more specifically: Spanish Golden Age palatine comedy genre and how it spread in Spain through Tirso de Molina and in England through James Shirley. Two dramatic pieces written by them will be presented: El castigo del penseque and The Opportunity. After firstly presenting palatine genre features, the historical, political and social environments affecting mentioned authors will be explored. Both previously mentioned dramatic pieces will be compared. Followed finally by general ideas gathered about the process. As part of the conclusion section, the impact of both dramatic pieces upon their respective contexts will be highlighted and how it affected their authors. Another highlighted concept will be the similarity between these mentioned representations in terms of some aspects. At the end, the geographical expansion of the palatine genre through Europe will be added alongside its benefits and difficulties.
