It is difficult to specify what it is to age, since it is highly differential and asynchronous in its manifestations. What is clear is that aging can not only imply a loss but also a gain because with age people also acquire knowledge and experience, both of which are very positive values. As the proportion of the world's long-lived population is booming, knowing the different ways of aging in depth is relevant. Therefore, the objective of the present work of end of degree is to study in depth this last stage of the life cycle clarifying the borders between the non-pathological and pathological aging. We will emphasize the latter, which is characterized by the presence of cognitive impairment and may, in some cases, evolve to dementia. Finally, we will consider how they can influence the way we have to age cerebral plasticity and cognitive reserve.
