The language of Brexit: A functional analysis of the discourse of British politics in the runway to the referendum

Abstract

[ES] Este trabajo constituye un análisis funcional del discurso político en el contexto específico de la campaña previa al referéndum del Brexit en el Reino Unido (junio 2016), centrado en el bando del Leave. Primero, se desarrolla el trasfondo académico del trabajo, recapitulando las principales ideas del Análisis Crítico del Discurso, la Gramática Sistémico-Funcional, y varias teorías pragmáticas relevantes para el estudio. Segundo, se presenta el contexto situacional a través de una explicación de los acontecimientos socio-políticos y las figuras importantes en el referéndum del Brexit, y la politología que encierra el populismo de derechas, fundamental para entender el éxito del Leave. Tercero, se lleva a cabo un análisis lingüístico profundo y detallado de un corpus de seis discursos de Brexiteers (7297 palabras), prestando atención a recursos para representar significado (tropos retóricos, presuposición, y agencia), aspectos de interacción textual (esquemas retóricos, y procesos de tematización y posposición), y recursos interpersonales (modo). Los seis apéndices al final del trabajo contienen más ejemplos de este análisis. El trabajo concluye poniendo énfasis en el papel que juega el discurso político en los resultados del referéndum, y caracterizando los rasgos del inglés del Brexit.

[EN] This dissertation constitutes a functional analysis of political discourse in the specific context of the campaign preceding the Brexit referendum in the United Kingdom (June 2016), with a focus on the Leave side. First, the researcher develops the academic background of the dissertation, revisiting the main tenets of Critica! Discourse Analysis, Systemic-Functional Grammar, and pragmatic theories relevant to the study. Second, the situational context is presented by delving into the socio-political events and characters surrounding the Brexit referendum, and the political science behind right-wing populism, fundamental in understanding the success of the Leave vote. Third, there is a profound and detailed linguistic analysis of a corpus of six Brexiteer speeches (7297 words), looking at ways of representing meaning (rhetorical tropes, presupposition, and agency), ways of interacting (rhetorical schemes, and processes of thematisation and postponement), and ways of being (modality). Further evidence is provided in a comprehensive list of six appendices. The dissertation concludes by emphasising the key role of political discourse in the results of the referendum, and by characterising the features of the language of Brexit on the basis of the findings.
