Roma en el teatro inglés: The Tragedy of Messallina (1640), de Nathaniel Richards

Abstract

El presente TFG es una contribución al estudio de la tradición clásica en el Teatro Inglés en la época jacobina. Para ello me ocupo de la tragedia TheTragedy of Messallina (1640) del dramaturgo inglés Nathaniel Richards. Se trata de una obra muy poco conocida, de la que no existe traducción española. Se analiza la obra en su contexto histórico y se presta especial atención a su contenido, estructura, personajes (en particular, a la protagonista principal, la emperatriz romana Mesalina, esposa de Claudio) y temas tratados en la tragedia (la libido de la emperatriz, la tiranía del poder, la exaltación de la virtud y la censura del vicio). También se presta atención a las fuentes latinas empleadas por el autor.

The TFG is a contribution to the study of the Classic tradition of the English Jacobine Theater. We study the work The Tragedy of Messallina (1640) whose author is the dramaturge Nathaniel Richards. It is a little known work, and it doesnt’t have a translation into Spanish. We study the tragedy in its historical context, paying attention to the content, structure, characters (particularly, the main character, the empress Messallina, wife of the emperor Claudius) and the themes of the tragedy (the libido of the Empress, the tyranny of the power, the exaltation of Virtue and the censorship of Vice). We pay also attention to the latin texts used by the author.
