A Comparative Analysis of Octavia Butler’s Kindred and its Graphic Novel Adaptation

Abstract

En este Trabajo de Fin de Grado se pretende analizar el libro de Kindred, una obra escrita por Octavia Butler en 1979 y la adaptación de la novela gráfica creada por Damian Duffy y John Jennings. Este trabajo contextualiza tanto la autora como la novela de Kindred desde el marco teórico de la ciencia ficción además de mostrar su relación con el posterior movimiento literario conocido como Afrofuturismo. Seguidamente, hay un análisis comparativo que nos permite conocer como esta novela fue llevada al plano visual la caracterización de los personajes y los eventos narrados en la novela original.

This essay seeks to analyze the book Kindred, written down by Octavia Butler in 1979 and the graphic novel adaptation created by Damian Duffy and John Jennings. This TFG contextualizes both the author and the novel of Kindred from a science fiction framework as well as showing its relationship with the later Afro-futurism movement. Subsequently, there is a comparative analysis between Octavia’s novel and the graphic adaptation made by Duffy and Jennings which let us know how this novel was brought to a visual level the characterization of the characters and the events narrated in the original novel.
