Bilingualism in Primary Education

Abstract

En este proyecto académico se ha llevado a cabo una revisión bibliográfica enfocada en los aspectos más relevantes del bilingüismo, y muy especialmente en la etapa de Educación Primaria. La enseñanza bilingüe se expande de forma progresiva en España y la mayoría de colegios públicos, privados y concertados han emprendido distintos programas bilingües para que los alumnos tengan la opción de descubrir un nuevo idioma de la manera más eficaz posible. Esto implica que el alumno pueda tener acceso al segundo idioma desde el primer día para que al finalizar la etapa escolar haya adquirido las destrezas necesarias para el dominio del segundo idioma. Para alcanzar esta ambiciosa meta, es imprescindible que el desarrollo del binomio enseñanza-aprendizaje se base en una adecuada metodología con el fin de conseguir excelentes resultados.

In this academic project, I propose a bibliographical review focused on the most relevant aspects of bilingualism, especially in Primary Education. In Spain, bilingual education is being expanding in a progressive way and the majority of public, private and charter schools have undertaken different bilingual programmes so that students learn a second language in an effective way. This implies that students have access to the second language from the first day of their education so that when they finish their school year they will have acquired the required skills to master the second language. In order to reach this ambitious goal, it is essential that the development of the pairing teaching-learning is based on a suitable methodology to achieve an excellent result.
