The Vision of the Role of Women in Eighteenth-Century Britain: Works by Susanna Centlivre (1667- 1723) and Mrs. E-G. Bayfield (1803-1816)

Abstract

El siglo dieciocho, ha sido considerado como un periodo de cambios económicos, sociales e individuales. En él, hubo un cambio político importante pero también a nivel cultural y en el modo de consumo, sobre la literatura y las reuniones sociales, que también sufrieron algunas modificaciones. Estas nuevas adaptaciones permitieron a la sociedad reconsiderar su actual modo de vida. Este contexto creó una atmósfera que impulsó la aparición de nuevas ideas como el racionalismo, el empirismo, y relacionado con los derechos de las mujeres, el feminismo. El objetivo de esta disertación, es mostrar cómo todos esos cambios se reflejan en la literatura, especialmente en la producida por Susanna Centlivre (1667-1723) y su teatro The Basset Table (1705) y Mrs. E-G. Bayfield (1803-1816) y su Fugitive Poems (1805). Estableceremos un análisis comparado para determinar si el espacio de tiempo entre ellas marca alguna diferencia en cuanto a estilo de escritura e ideología feminista.

The long Eighteenth Century in Britain has been considered to be a period of economic, social, and individual changes. There was an important evolution in the political system but also culture and the way of consuming, mostly reflected in literature and in social meetings, also suffered important transformations. These new adaptations allowed society to reconsider its traditional way of living. This context created an atmosphere which encouraged the emergence of new ideological attitudes, such as rationalism, empiricism and, concerning women’s rights, feminism. The aim of this dissertation is to discuss how all these changes were reflected in some literary works, especially those produced by some women writers: Susanna Centlivre (1667-1723) and her play The Basset Table (1705) and Mrs. E-G. Bayfield’s (1803-1816) Fugitive Poems (1805). We shall conduct a comparative analysis to determine whether the space of time between them marks any differences both in their written style and feminist ideology.
