Teaching Moral Values through the Mersey Poets

Abstract

[ES]El objetivo de este Trabajo de Fin de Máster es desarrollar una unidad didáctica para motivar a los estudiantes de secundaria a usar la literatura como una forma para aprender valores morales. Para lograr esto, usaré poemas de los poetas Mersey Beat, ya que incluyen un vocabulario apropiado para estudiantes de 4º de Educación Secundaria Obligatoria del sistema educativo español. Los estudiantes practicarán las cuatro habilidades lingüísticas (lectura, comprensión auditiva, expresión oral y escritura) a través de actividades motivadoras, pero también a través de material auténtico, como textos literarios (poemas). Además, los estudiantes tendrán una buena oportunidad para aprender sobre literatura inglesa y practicar con un lenguaje que está destinado a hablantes nativos. La literatura no solo es útil para crear actividades motivadoras para las aulas de inglés como lengua extranjera, sino que también para enseñar aspectos culturales. Los estudiantes tratarán con valores morales que están integrados en la sociedad y que están presentes en situaciones cotidianas. Se darán cuenta –eso espero– de que la lucha contra la discriminación para alcanzar la igualdad entre los miembros de la sociedad estuvo presente también en otros períodos de la historia. Los estudiantes deben aprender que la literatura no es aburrida y que pueden aprender mucho sobre diferentes culturas e ideologías.

[EN]The aim of this MA dissertation is to develop a didactic unit to motivate secondary school students to use literature as a way of learning moral values. In order to achieve this, I will use poems written by the Mersey Beat poets, since they include a vocabulary that is appropriate for students of the 4th year of Compulsory Secondary Education of the Spanish educational system. Students will practise the four language skills (reading, listening, speaking and writing) through motivating activities, but also through authentic material such as literary texts (poems). Furthermore, students will have a good opportunity to get to know more about English literature and to practise with language that is intended for native speakers. Literature is not only useful for creating motivating activities for EFL classrooms, but also for teaching cultural aspects. Students will be dealing with moral values that are embedded in society and that are present in daily situations. They will hopefully realise that the fight against discrimination in order to reach equality between members of society was present in other periods of history. Students should learn that literature is not boring and that they may learn a lot about different cultures and ideologies.
