Resumen
[ES]Durante los últimos años, han crecido exponencialmente las aportaciones al campo del
Turismo Académico, trabajos de investigación que han tratado alguno de los aspectos que lo
componen y, además, han desarrollado metodologías que permiten, empíricamente, identificar
dichos aspectos. Además, existen estudios que han desarrollado marcos conceptuales del
concepto de destino turístico. Por otro lado, el sector turístico sigue aumentando sus cifras y,
por ende, el número de destinos turísticos emergentes, algunos de éstos, sin éxito. A través del
análisis de las publicaciones más relevantes que han tratado el concepto de destino turístico, se
han determinado cuatro elementos esenciales para la configuración de un territorio como
destino turístico: la homogeneidad administrativa, una oferta estructurada, una marca y el
capital social. De este modo, un destino turístico será un territorio que conste de una oferta
estructurada, una marca que lo identifique, un capital social y que sea susceptible de ser
gestionado, es decir, que posea un determinado grado de homogeneidad administrativa.

[EN]During last years, contributions to the Academic Tourism field have exponentially grown, and these research works have dealt with some of the aspects that form it. Besides, they have developed methodologies that allow, empirically, identify these aspects. In addition, there are studies which have developed a tourism destination conceptual frameworks. Apart from this, tourism sector keeps increasing its numbers and therefore, the number of emerging tourism destinations, some of them, without success. Through the analysis of the most relevant publication which have dealt with the tourism destination concept, four key elements have been determined to the configuration of the territory as a tourism destination: administrative homogeneity, a structured supply, a brand and the social capital. Hence, a tourism destination will be a territory that consist of a structured supply, a brand that identify it, a social capital and, it has to be open to be managed, that is, it has a certain grade of administrative homogeneity.
