Resumen
[ES] El objetivo del trabajo es determinar el efecto de la sedación paliativa en la evolución de la enfermedad
terminal así como identificar los aspectos éticos que engloba la sedación. Para ello se ha realizado una
revisión bibliográfica en base a 36 estudios obtenidos. En cuanto a los resultados se observa que la
sedación paliativa no influye en la supervivencia ya que no existe diferencia significativa entre el
tiempo de vida de pacientes sedados frente a no sedados, se ha comprobado que existe diversidad de
opiniones sobre la sedación paliativa y su influencia sobre el paciente tanto por parte de sanitarios
como de familiares. Se ha verificado que la sedación paliativa y la eutanasia son procesos diferentes con
objetivos, intención y efecto totalmente distintos. La retirada de fluidos y alimentos no afecta a la
supervivencia del paciente en fase terminal y debe ser considerada como procedimiento independiente
de la sedación paliativa.
[EN] The objective of this study was to determine the effect of palliative sedation on the evolution of the terminal illness and to identify the ethical aspects of sedation. For this purpose, a bibliographic review has been carried out based on 36 studies. As to the results, it is observed that palliative sedation does not influence survival since there is no significant difference between the life time of sedated versus non-sedated patients, it has been verified that there is a diversity of opinions about palliative sedation and its influence On the patient both by health workers and relatives. It has been verified that palliative sedation and euthanasia are different processes with totally different objectives, intention and effect. The withdrawal of fluids and foods does not affect the survival of the terminal patient and should be considered as an independent procedure of palliative sedation.
