Biomedicine advances produced a paternalistic attitude from the health professionals leaving the woman in a secondary role of participation in the delivery. Normal childbirth has been institutionalized and has been pathologized, being a physiological process in which the psychological part must also be treated so that it was satisfactory. It seeks to deepen the knowledge of a humanized care of the mother to achieve positive results and satisfaction. A narrative review has been performed using 32 articles from databases or other sources using search strings and using inclusion criteria. Midwives, as care providers, must attend humanly for being it beneficial. It requires a favorable professional-patient relationship, maternal protagonism and assess what practices to perform. In conclusion, beneficial practices should be encouraged and harmful practices avoided. Professional training and maternal education are required to humanize childbirth.
