[EN] Schizophrenic relapses entail great problems for the patient and the health system. The objective of the study is intended to know the factors and reasons for abandoning therapy as well as determining the prevalence of schizophrenic relapses in the rural area of Ubeda. An observational, cross-sectional, descriptive study was carried out in which information was obtained about different variables of the sociodemographic and specific variables of the illness. It was collected through self-administered interviews to male patients older than 30 years old that have returned to the mental health unit at Ubeda’s hospital due to schizophrenia. The results show that the principal factors for relapses were: abandoning therapy, the consuming of drugs, not accepting the disease, secondhand effects of the treatment, suffering stress, anxiety, or conflicting family relationships. The rate of relapsing in returning patients achieved an average of 6, 38 ± 1, 51 times, a rather higher rate than desired.
