La mutilación genital femenina desde el ámbito sanitario

Abstract

[ES] La Mutilación Genital Femenina (MGF), según la OMS, consiste en la extirpación parcial o total de los órganos genitales femeninos externos, que no sea por razones terapéuticas. Esta práctica es la más extendida dentro del grupo de costumbres tradicionales perjudiciales, se estima que 3 millones de mujeres y niñas son sometidas a ella cada año, siendo África el que muestra más altas prevalencias, fundamentada principalmente en razones socioculturales. Conlleva unas graves consecuencias para la mujer, tanto físicas, psíquicas como sociales irreparables e irreversibles que empeoran su estado de salud y calidad de vida. Tras los movimientos migratorios la práctica se ha extendido por sociedades de todo el mundo, tratándose por tanto de un problema global y suponiendo un reto para los y las profesionales de la salud. Es necesario implementar intervenciones preventivas acerca de la MGF y capacitar a los profesionales de la salud para ello.

[EN] The Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) according to the WHO consists of the partial or total extirpation of the genital feminine external organs, which is not for therapeutic reasons. This practice is most extended inside the group of traditional harmful customs, it thinks that 3 million women and girls are submitted to it every year, being Africa the one that proves to be higher prevalence, based principally on sociocultural reasons. It has serious consequences for the woman, both physical, psychic and social, that are irreparable and irreversible and it worsen their state of health and quality of life. After the migratory movements the practice has spread over societies of the whole world, treating itself therefore about a global problem and supposing a challenge for the professionals of the health. It is necessary to implement preventive interventions brings over of the MGF and to qualify the professionals of the health for it.
