[EN]Stroke is the leading cause of permanent disability in adults and involves high health care costs and family expenses. It has been reviewed the literature to explore the general aspects of this disease, with particular attention to the study of nursing role in the management of stroke patients at the different stages of the care process. Nursing interventions promote patient independence, reduce the burden of family care and minimize disability and morbidity caused by this disease. In addition, health education programs on prevention, which are conducted in primary care by family nurses and case managers, help the population to understand and control the main risk factors for this disease. These programs also teach the patient to promptly recognize potential warning signs as well as awareness of the need for fast and effective action.
