“El redimensionamiento del sistema bancario español”

Abstract

[ES]Este trabajo está dedicado al estudio de la crisis bancaria ocurrida en España a raíza de la ocasionada en Estados Unidos como consecuencia de la amplia concesión de hipotecas subprime por parte de las entidades de crédito. En España, la consecuencia de esta crisis fue un profundo cambio en el sector bancario y más concretamente en el sector de las cajas de ahorro, al provocar la desaparición de la gran mayoría de ellos a través de fusiones e integraciones. A través de este trabajo se analizarán las causas que llevaron a las autoridades españolas a realizar este tipo de procesos y como también se consiguió rescatar el sistema gracias a la ayuda financiera de la Unión Europea.

[EN]This paper is devoted to the study of the banking crisis occurred in Spain, as a result of the crisis originated in the United States accordingly to extensive granting of subprime mortgages by credit institutions. In Spain, the consequence of this crisis was a profound change in the banking sector, specifically in the sector of savings banks, causing the disappearance of the vast majority of them through mergers and integrations. Through this work we will analyze the causes that led the Spanish authorities to carry out this type of processes and how, thanks to the financial assistance of the European Union, they were able to bring the Spanish banking system afloat.
