Ítem ON AIR: RADIO AS A CLASSROOM TOOL IN THE TEACHING OF ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE(2017-05-26) Roberts, Cassandra; Olivares-Merino, Julio-ÁngelIncorporating radio to the foreign language classroom is an extremely exploitable resource. Radio is a tool which, surprisingly, has been rather over-looked in terms of educational purposes and was substituted by other tools such as television and internet. This project aims to describe what educational radio is, what it involves, and how to use it. One of the principle reasons radio should be incorporated to English class in Secondary Education is flexibility. This is because radio can be adapted to the FL classroom in an infinite number of ways and for a variety of reasons. In addition, radio meets the expectations of the Common European Framework since it is a communicative tool which fosters receiving and answering messages in the foreign language as well as being culturally enriching for its unpinned origin, diverse topic range and authenticity. Finally, motivation is an essential question to take into account in any teaching context. Related with the first idea, radio is diverse, which means that it can be included in lessons in a never-ending number of ways, which breaks from routine and is, therefore, motivating. Another reason for radio being particularly inspiring is that it is a dynamic and active tool, especially when creating radio programmes.
