Formada por una agrupación de pueblos en el siglo VIII a.C., llego a dominar el mundo mediterráneo y la Europa occidental desde el siglo I hasta el V, convirtiéndose en un gran imperio. Un proceso largo con numerosos cambios sociales, políticos y económicos dio lugar a que Roma, fuese considerada la ciudad más importante del mundo. El crecimiento de una sociedad, la expansión del comercio o la enérgica actividad política, fueron aspectos clave en el devenir del mundo romano en aquella etapa y supuso un legado que perdura hasta nuestros días. Uno de los operadores comerciales más importantes es sin duda la figura del argentarius.
