Luchar contra la invasión musulmana que desde el siglo VIII están en la península Ibérica. Para ello van a tomar como referencia las órdenes fundadas tras la primera cruzada como la del Temple. Los Santiaguistas se van a instalar en la sierra de Segura tras la reconquista cristiana del lugar y van a crear una encomienda, la de Segura con el fin de administrar y organizar el territorio. Estas órdenes religioso militares van a conseguir durante los siglos XIII Y XIV gran importancia económica y política, siendo decisivos en el devenir de los acontecimientos como guerras o intrigas. Sin embargo, con la llegada de los Reyes Católicos y el fin de la reconquista, dichas órdenes van a ir progresivamente integrándose en la corona, y perdiendo poder e influencia.(EN) The Order of Santiago was created in the mid-twelfth century with the main objective of defending Christianity in the historical context of the reconquest.
