VARIETIES OF ENGLISH AROUND THE WORLD AND IN EFL CLASSROOM

Abstract

Este trabajo trata sobre las diferentes variedades del inglés habladas en el mundo. En primer lugar, se introducen algunos conceptos relacionados con el término variedad -dialecto, acento-. En segundo lugar, se focaliza en variedades del inglés habladas por hablantes nativos: inglés británico, irlandés, americano, canadiense, australiano y también en variedades de países donde el inglés es la segunda lengua (Sudáfrica, India y el Caribe). Antes de explicar cada variedad en términos lingüísticos, se ofrece una breve introducción histórica de cómo el inglés llegó a Irlanda, Estados Unidos, Canadá, Australia, Nueva Zelanda, Sudáfrica, India y al Caribe. Posteriormente, se muestran diferentes puntos de vista y opiniones de diferentes autores sobre cuáles variedades del inglés son las más 'estándar' y las más usadas en contextos académicos, para ser exactos en Europa y España, donde el inglés se enseña como Lengua Extranjera (EFL).

This work deals with the different varieties of English spoken around the world. Firstly, sorne concepts such as dialect or accent, which are closely related to the term variety are introduced. Secondly, focus will be on those varieties of English spoken by native speakers: British, lrish, American, Canadian, and Australian English and also on varieties from countries where English is the second language (South African, lndian and Caribbean English). A brief historical explanation of the origins of English and how this language spread in lreland, the US, Ganada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India and Caribbean countries will be given before explaining each variety from a linguistic point of view. After this, different opinions from different authors about which varieties of English are the 'most standard ones' will be offered, and which are the most taught in academic contexts-Europe and Spain-, where English is taught as a Foreign Language (EFL).
