Desde hace tiempo, se observa una gran sobreprotección en familias con algún miembro con determinado tipo de discapacidad intelectual (autismo, síndrome de Down, parálisis cerebral). Por ello, es conveniente el fomento de la autonomía en este tipo de personas, para mejorar su calidad de vida favoreciendo y potenciando tanto sus habilidades de autonomía personal como de su vida social, logrando un desarrollo individual y social adecuado y brindándole así la oportunidad de introducirse en el mundo laboral.
En este trabajo se presenta una revisión bibliográfica acerca de la importancia que tiene la existencia de la autodeterminación en la vida de estas personas ya que, si no es así, afectará negativamente el desarrollo de éstas, impidiendo la participación en distintas actividades de la vida diaria. También se comenta que tanto la familia como los centros educativos son la base principal en el progreso de los niños/as con discapacidad intelectual.

It is therefore advisable promoting autonomy in these people, to improve their quality of life by promoting and enhancing their skills both personal autonomy and their social life, achieving individual and social development and providing adequate and the opportunity to enter the labor market.
